019 – Host with the Most

I once saw a cheap horror rental in the 90s called Brain Damage. The film’s protagonist was a guy who was “hooked” on the brain chemicals this brain leech poured on him by extending a spike into his neck and squirting his brain.

This was intended to be a metaphor for drug abuse, I’m sure, because the guy gets hooked on the brain leech so much that he even “sees” things like brains in place of meatballs on a spaghetti dish.

I don’t know if that description makes you want to see the movie more, or less, but I’ll spoil it. Desperate to get back on the juice, he goes and retrieves Aylmer (I think that’s the brain leech’s name) and either somebody wants to stop him or something goes wrong and Aylmer gets squeezed mid-juicing. It blows a hole in the guy’s head.

The end. Don’t do brain leeches, folks.

018 – Just Keep Digging

Why write at all? I’ve already established that it’s not to become rich. It’s to sing. If being heard and paid happens, then that’s fine. But for now, I have to keep digging my hole.

That last part sounds awkward. Just edit it in your mind so that it sounds less so.

017 – Amelia

Two years before she passed away, Amelia tagged me in a photo of a turtle sundae. It comes up in my memories on November 15, and I think of her and the energy she brought to the school where we worked together after unknowingly being in the same high school class together in Chicago.

This was just a single example of her memory. There were so many more. She was friendly and funny and worked endlessly to help the diverse learners and other students under her care. They were in high school, but they were still hers to nurture and encourage.

It’s unfathomable that life could hurt her so much.

RIP Amelia.

016 – Professional Development

Did this one as an homage to webcomicname, the webcomic with the same punchline everyday, but endless amounts of variety in the paneling.

The actual text of this conversation is based on one that actually took place at a professional development online where someone remembered my previous shenanigans from another professional development.

“Oh we know all about Felix” sort of thing.

The blobby shapes from webcomicname seem to fit this situation perfectly.

015 – Long Night Roads

Wrote this on a road trip alone, of course. The only thing to keep me company was an audiobook that, while good, was making me sleepy, and the promise of stops at a Steak and Shake along the way.

I’ve done several drives like this. It’s okay for an hour or two. I can make good progress in a book, a podcast, something. But it ends up feeling very lonely in the dark when I’m paranoid about a roadside disaster.
