014-Be Aggressive

I swear this series of diagonal lines was supposed to represent a football field. And my cheerleader illustration isn’t the greatest.

She’s obviously based on some kind of Buffy reference. SHS, the post-script, etc. But Sarah Michelle Gellar my drawing is not.

I wonder what gets you in more trouble with celebrities. A skilled, accurate drawing of them that’s modest,or a fugly drawing that lacks skill.

013 – Advice

Real teaching advice from a friend and coworker. He caught on to my self esteem issues and I’ve tried to honor his request since then. He gave it to me like an order, but I’ve taken it on as friendly advice.

Of course, the post script is also true. He never said “Love yourself.” Probably would have seen that as a weak and unseemly thing to say. But it’s implied in the first part.

Maybe it isn’t. His intention was probably more about showing a strong front and building up from there, but I still take the unintended message to heart.

012 – Squishy Planet

I suppose it’s too much to expect people to get that this is an homage to the old webcomic asofterworld. I would say that Emily and Joey have had as much an influence on me as Walt Whitman has. I simply never had the photography skills to do what Emily did or Joey’s scripting to make it work all on my own.

I have the curse of many poets who want to be heard/read/seen. I’m terrified that no one will read my stuff. I’m terrified that people will read my stuff.

011 A Noiseless, Patient Spider

The poem that got me into this whole mess.

Hopefully the lone spider doesn’t offend or genuinely creep out some of m y readers. I drew him as small as I felt I could to get the idea across.

Walt Whitman’s view of his soul, aside from welcoming it to loafe with himself, is one that resonates with me. Seeking the spheres to connect them describes knowledge and discovery and communication and so much. If I didn’t believe that, I wouldn’t have named my webcomic after it.

You can’t tell, but the immigrant parents are modeled after American Gothic, lol.

Their little girl will take over the world with her magical implantation tech.
